The Shadow Secretary of State for International Development and Director of the CCF answers Conservatism magazine's Quick Questionnaire

What is the greatest strength of today's Britain?

Its cosmopolitanism. Several generations of immigrants are now well integrated within British society compared to other countries.

What is the greatest weakness of today's Britain?

Family breakdown. Over the last twenty years the seeds of social chaos have been sown and I fear that a lot of unhappiness will follow.

Where or when do you feel closest to God?

When I am aware that I cannot do something in my own strength. When I get complacent things can go wrong.

Should MPs undertake community or charitable work?

Yes, as being an MP is, in my view, both community and charitable work. This sort of work would help MPs get the picture of other people in this position.

Do politics and Christianity mix?

Yes. To do politics well requires a set of ideals and a heart to serve others, which was Jesus' commission to us.

Do you think that there is life on other planets?

No idea but the scientific evidence is minimal. Maybe we should try sorting out our own first!

Do you have a political hero?

Elizabeth I, who inspired others with a lion's heart in a female frame.

Is the media too powerful in Britain?

The media is powerful everywhere but ours seems particularly cynical and destructive.

If you had to name a false idol worshipped by modern Britons what would it be?

Status. The nation is wealthier and shows it but the gap between the 'haves' and 'have nots' is growing.

Who would you propose as a contemporary role model for Britain's young people?

Venus Williams. She is a great example of someone overcoming disadvantage and reaching the top.

Who is your favourite author?

Bill Bryson - when I get the chance!

What is your hope for the 21st century?

Peace until the 22nd century, which would be a record for mankind.

Which foreign country do you most respect?

Hungary for its free spirit.

How should Britain best tackle racism?

Integration and education. Making the effort to recruit people from ethnic minorities to senior positions.

Do you agree that ethics in public life are on the slide?

Arrested by Neill.

How do you relax?

Cooking and gardening - I like to eat the proceeds!

What do you most look forward to?

Holidays with my children: building sandcastles, painting watercolours and the odd glass of wine
