The MP for Upminster answers Conservatism magazine's Quick Questionnaire
What is the greatest strength of today's Britain?
The innate decency of most people.
What is the greatest weakness of today's Britain?
Rights without responsibilities.
Where or when do you feel closest to God?
In wide open spaces.
What is your favourite hymn?
'And can it be'.
Should MPs undertake community or charitable work?
If time allows (it looks unlikely!)
Do politics and Christianity mix?
Yes. Both are about making the right decisions - Christian principles influence all personal relationships.
Do you think that there is life on other planets?
Probably not, as we know it.
Do you have a political hero?
Lady Thatcher - she succeeded in a man's world and rescued Britain from its reputation as the 'sick man of Europe'.
Is the media too powerful in modern Britain?
No, but public broadcasting should be impartial.
If you had to name a false idol worshipped by modern Britons what would it be?
TV "soaps". They celebrate failure, promiscuity and the pursuit of whims. The characters lurch from one disaster to another, directionless, and never seem to learn from their mistakes. They are followed by millions and the stars are feted.
Which of the Ten Commandments does society most need to relearn?
Thou shalt not bear false witness.
Who is your favourite author?
Dickens.
What is your hope for the 21st century?
Opportunity and independence for all. More married parents or families.
Which foreign country do you most respect?
New Zealand. The economy of this Commonwealth ally was all but ruined when we joined the Common Market yet they were first on the scene to help us in the Falklands War - a real show of loyalty.
How should Britain best tackle racism?
Through children - the younger the better.
Do you agree that ethics in public life are on the slide?
Yes - we need to re-establish the concept of "duty".
How do you relax?
In the bath!
What do you most look forward to?
Watching my grandchildren grow up, and being able to help them.
