| Lady Baker, a member of the Conservative Christian Fellowship's Governing Council, answers Conservatism magazine's Quick Questionnaire
What is the greatest strength of today's Britain?
There is a certain steadiness about the British character. It is not volatile. On the contrary it is incredibly fair-minded and is to be found in the silent majority.
What is the greatest weakness of today's Britain?
Being governed by men and women who fear mortal mankind more than they fear God. We learn that "fear of man will prove a snare" and that is indeed what we are experiencing.
Where or when do you feel closest to God?
Walking, worshipping and reading. "Living Light" and Teazel, my labrador, roam me every morning and afternoon down in Dorset. I get lift off when I sing both in church or listening to praise tapes in the car. Then at home there is my favourite chair where I will know I will meet with my Lord and saviour as I read His Word.
Should MPs undertake community or charitable work?
Having been an MP's wife I rather though that was already part of the job description.
Do politics and Christianity mix?
Yes. Tragically we have witnessed a postwar period of mutual disrespect between Church and State. Mercifully George Carey has sought to repair the damage. Jesus' approach is first to cherish, then to challenge, and then to change the hearts of men and women. It is a lifelong process but one person living in loving obedience will be a truly effective politician.
Do you think that there is life on other planets?
Can't say I really give it much thought.
Do you have a political hero?
Margaret Thatcher. She was steadfast and lionhearted and, through her, I came to understand the qualities required for leadership. My husband was first elected in 1979 and it was a truly remarkable political era in which to be serving.
Is the media too powerful in Britain?
It can be perceived to be all powerful. For unless mankind is alert to the forces of darkness that surround him, he will unwittingly absorb that which surrounds him. Choice is essential. Praise God for Premier Radio, Christian TV channels, worship and teaching, and the huge variety of books and magazines. Who says a daily newspaper is essential..?
Name a false idol worshipped by modern Britons?
The God of Liberty and Freedom is the one we serve: 'give me licence to do as I please for it is my right as a citizen to be happy and fulfilled'.
Who would you propose as a contemporary role model for Britain's young people?
Peer pressure weighs heavily each day on the lives of our children. Sister Roseann Reddy, headhunted by Cardinal Winning, and living on the coalface, is a fine example of a modern David and Goliath scenario.
Who is your favourite author?
I haven't really got a favourite. R T Kendall, C S Lewis, Benny Hinn, Saki, Gordon's Bailey's poems and P G Wodehouse. Essential reading - One New Man by Reuven Doron.
What is your hope for the 21st century?
That the Bride of Christ, the Church, in this nation will be fully prepared for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and that She may be worthy of the Bridegroom.
What were the best and worst aspects of the Thatcher years?
The sale of council houses, the reduction of union power and the general dispersal of the dependency culture. Approaching the long-term educational changes too late and acquiescing to the plans of Nigel Lawson and Geoffrey Howe against her better judgement.
Which foreign country do you most respect?
Behind the envy and criticism that it attracts the USA is an impressive place, containing 250 million citizens who are committed to freedom and enterprise. At the other end of the spectrum is Zambia and its President, Mr Chiluba. Watch this space.
Is Labour obsessed with gay rights?
Labour exercises favouritism and is bent on granting freedom and equality to certain groups in society.
Do you agree that ethics in public life are on the slide?
We live in a third generation pagan society so it is hardly surprising that ethics in public life and society in general and sliding so fast.
How do you relax?
Walking, sewing, listening to music, reading, photography and creating family albums. When Nicholas was alive there was so little time in which to switch off. I am learning to be a human being rather than a human doing.
What do you most look forward to?
That revival will come and the nation will once again be governed by godly men and women, and the Church will be characterised by the Holy Spirit.
