*****
My political life began in 1987 when I was elected as a District Councillor, taking a seat from the Liberal Democrats. In 1992 when retiring from nursing I was elected as a County Councillor for Rickmansworth. I am still 'twin-tracking' because I find this advantageous in best serving people - particularly those who are most vulnerable.
I was introduced to the Conservative Christian Fellowship at a Party Conference by another councillor colleague who later became an MP. We attended a CCF Prayer Breakfast and I met Tim Montgomerie, Director of the CCF. Tim is a person I respect and admire. In 1998-99 I had the honourable duty to be elected Chairman of the Council. That year brought me closer to the people, and particularly the young people. I was determined to hold a civic Church Service during my year of office to share my thanks to God with the community I was elected to serve. This was the first time a Chairman's Civic Service was held in this Council District. The ATC Band joined the celebration as did girls from a local school who were doing their Duke of Edinburgh Award. I was delighted and grateful that Tim Montgomerie was able to participate in this Thanksgiving Service at Christ Church, Chorleywood. It is an occasion I will always recall fondly.
The Conservatives' newly-elected leader, Iain Duncan Smith, will, I believe, set the Conservative Party on the right path with his promises of a more vibrant 'welfare society' - valuing the good life and the good society for those without power and riches.
I am grateful to the CCF and for the friends I have made within it. I am grateful "for all of us as we seek to grow in our understanding of God's love and share that love with others."
