I remember as a child always wondering who "they" were. "They" were obviously in charge because the adults around me blamed them for everything that was wrong in life. I just knew that I wanted to be one of "them".
I was brought up to do everything to the absolute best of my ability. Anything less was seen as "letting the side down" and I still thrive on aiming for seemingly unachievable targets. The Christian principles of doing ones best and helping others sit very comfortably with those of the Conservative Party.
When my children were small, I worked in a special school. It was one of the most rewarding chapters of my life. I had hitherto taken the good health of my own children for granted. Some of the pupils had very disabling conditions but were totally without resentment or bitterness. They all did their own "best" with optimism and good humour. It certainly gave me a new perspective on achievement. I have grave reservations about the total inclusion policy in education and will continue to champion the need for special schools in the range of provision for children with special needs.
Later, I worked in local government where it became evident that I was on the wrong side of the table because "they" were sitting opposite. Face to face at last! I determined to join them. I got myself elected and took to being a local councillor and later a county councillor like a duck to water. Helping to make decisions that affect people's everyday lives is a big responsibility but I relish it. By this time, the call of Westminster was irresistible and as a very atypical candidate (by getting elected!) I was able to demonstrate that the Conservative Party and its supporters really are a broad church.
