My faith is the most important part of my life. I have always been interested in politics and believe that Conservatism is the best hope for our country and particularly for the poor and disadvantaged. The Conservative Christian Fellowship (CCF) has always been an organisation that recognised my commitment to the former and has supported my aspirations in the latter. It thus always seemed a particularly important organisation to be part of and to contribute to. Indeed, I am still puzzled by Conservative Christians who do not want to be part of CCF's contribution to the renewal of our party.
I am very fortunate in that my wife, Harriet, is also a Christian and a Conservative and indeed has been a member of CCF for longer than I have! This is something I particularly value as my new job as an MP means that I spend long hours away from home and my three young children. To know of Harriet's support for the ideals that I striving for in parliament is particularly important to me.
CCF has given me some wonderful opportunities to develop myself in the course of my own political journey. I have been able to write articles for the CCF's Conservatism magazine that have helped me sharpen my ideas and my prose. It has also made me research more deeply into areas that I would not otherwise have done.
I have also been able to encourage CCF members to get more involved in their local parties and to stand as local and parliamentary candidates. This has been hugely rewarding for me and I hope for those concerned. CCF exists to promote individuals who share its vision within the life of the party and not to be an organisation for its own sake.
