Our masters swimmers are of a widely mixed ability. Some swim at National and International level, whilst others prefer local galas or just fitness swimming. We are able to cater for all abilities, and you can swim as little or as often as you wish.

We also have social events, such as a Christmas party, curry nights (particularly popular after galas) and have been known to enter a charity fundraising Quiz Night!

WHAT IS MASTERS SWIMMING?

Masters swimming is swimming for adults. It encompasses the whole range of ability from fitness swimming to highly organised competetive swimming. To qualify as a 'masters' swimmer you only need to be over 25 years of age. However there are a number of competitions which include events for 'seniors'- those aged 19-24.

Masters swimming comes under the umbrella of the ASA. It began in the 1970s in America, and has now spread throughout the world, but remains a sport in which all who want to compete can do so. The broad objectives are better health, better fitness, and friendship between swimmers. There is no compulsion to compete.

In the UK there are currently some 5,000 swimmers of masters age registered with the ASA, and about 400 clubs involved.

Masters competitions are organised in five year age bands, from 25-29, 30-34, and upward (and upward as required). The oldest age group result so far is 101-104!
Not only are there local open meets, but short and long course National Championships, European and World Championships. Unlike mainstream swimming, masters competitions rarely impose a qualifying standard, so if you wish to take part, you can. Competitions are almost always seeded on the basis of ability, and therefore whatever your standard you will swim against others of a similar standard, but quite probably not age.

The easiest way to get involved is to come along and have a go.
